Austin Girl Pilates - Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis affects over 28 million Americans.  Pilates instructors have a clear responsibility to understand this debilitating condition, when over 50% of their clientele either have osteoporotic bones or are at high risk.  As 'baby boomers' age into the risk stage, this number will only increase. Research shows that by increasing resistance and strength training, as well as, calcium/ magnesium/ Vitamin D intake, osteoporosis can be a completely avoidable condition.

Over 28 million Americans, 80% of whom are women are affected by osteoporosis, including 50% of women over 65.  It is estimated that among men and women over 45, osteoporosis is responsible for 1.5 million bone fractures per year.

 Who is at risk?

  • The typical profile for studio clientele is 70% female; 70% of this group is over 40.  Recent studies show that the average age of menopause (now 52 years) is dropping and that many American women start to lose estrogen beginning at age 40.  Thus, almost 50% of studio clientele are, or will soon be, at risk.

Symptoms of Osteoporosis:

  • Back Pain
  • Height Loss
  • Curving Spine
  • Broken Bones
